What is Adult Acne?

Acne isn't just a part of being a teenager, it can also occur in our older years and it’s called Adult Acne. Adult acne can happen in men and women, but it's more common in women. It can be caused by an array of different factors, but usually it's brought on by hormonal changes. Hormones can get the skin's sebaceous glands to overreact, producing more oil than necessary in the glands. The process builds up dead skin cells and bacteria, then wham! ... acne abounds. Adult acne tends to pop up primarily along the chin, jawline and neck areas.

Stress can be a big factor or cause of an adult acne outbreak. Stress raises cortisol levels in the body, a hormone that promotes overreactive oil glands. The irregular reaction can clog pores and create skin inflammation. Hormone imbalance can also be a major contributor to adult acne. Medication, birth control, menopause, pregnancy, PMS and anything that affects the hormones needs to be taken into consideration to effectively diagnose and treat acne.

Because adult acne tends to occur during the time when skin is normally treated with anti-aging products, it can be difficult to find the right products that will effectively address the combination of acne, anti-aging and proper skin balancing. In some cases, skin care treatments typically recommended for teenage acne problems can be used to treat adult acne, but other ingredients must be included or excluded for effective care. Adult skin tends to be dryer than teenage skin, posing issues with the use of ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide, but Salicylic Acid, Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur and essential oils work incredibly well. These ingredients clear up acne lesions and provide an anti-bacterial surface that helps prevent future breakouts.

Other ingredients to look for in treating adult acne include natural skin lighteners like Daisy Extract, Licorice Root and Alpha Beta Hydroxy Acids. These ingredients don't just lighten areas of post-inflammation hyperpigmentation, (scar tissue left from acne), they also even skin tone and provide anti-aging benefits by sloughing away dead surface cells. Regular treatments improve skin texture, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, while preventing buildup of pore-clogging bacteria on the skin's surface.

When tackling adult acne, it's important to follow a daily skin care regimen with products suited for treating adult acne and other skin factors. Proper diet, exercise and an overall healthy lifestyle will greatly enhance/improve the treatment time of adult acne. If hormone therapy, medications or medical conditions seem to be a cause for acne flareups, consult a physician and/or a dermatologist to receive the appropriate advice/treatment.

Many estheticians are properly trained in adult acne protocols. Skin Trends experts thrive on the use of knowledge that helps clients achieve healthy and beautiful skin.
