Salicylic Acid, also known as Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), is commonly used in skincare treatment for acne and oily skin. Salicylic Acid is derived from the Salix Alba (White Willow) plant. The active part of the plant is found in the bark extract.  White Willow bark is also the same source of aspirin, so people with aspirin allergies should avoid Salicylic Acid.

This Beta Hydroxy Acid has anti-inflammatory benefits on the skin as well as exfoliation properties. BHA can remove dead surface cells to encourage regrowth of healthier cells. This process allows for the pores to become unpacked and unclogged as BHAs antiseptic properties give the skin's surface an ultimate deep clean. Salicylic Acid has the ability to penetrate deep into the pores of people with oily skin types, meaning blackhead- and whitehead-prone comedones will be loosened and released.

Salicylic Acid's medicinal properties have been widely used with great popularity in the treatment of acne and blemishes. Precautions should be taken with Salicylic Acid when it comes to sun exposure. A UVA and UVB sunscreen should be worn to protect the skin from photo damage. Salicylic Acid may also be used in anti-aging treatments, as it can exfoliate the skin, giving fine lines and wrinkles a smoother, finer appearance on the skin.
