What are Crow's Feet?

Crow's feet are commonly known as those pesky lines and wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes. These deep wrinkles form and deepen as we age, becoming more prominent over time. They're usually the first set of wrinkles to show up on the face. Crow's feet wrinkles tend to initially appear in the mid to late 30s. Depending on the condition of the skin and general care, though, they can reveal themselves in the mid 20s. People who avoid the sun and/or are genetically fortunate can sometimes avoid wrinkles well into their 40s.

Skin elasticity is responsible for keeping the skin "springy" and “bouncy.” Collagen synthesis produced from fibroblasts in the dermal layers of the skin keep the skin smooth and youthful. As we age, however, collagen synthesis slows down, creating wrinkling in the skin. Because of the lack of collagen in the skin, lines and wrinkles can and will form.

One of the most prevalent causes for the development of Crow's feet is sun exposure. Photo damage to the skin can break down collagen and elastin. The repetitive movement of squinting, along with UV damage, will also create a permanent crease at the corners of the eyes, forming what is known as Crow's feet wrinkles. As time goes by, fine lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage deepen, especially if preventative measures aren't taken. Sunscreen and sunglasses with UV-protection lenses should be worn when out in the sun to avoid squinting. Proper and consistent protection can give skin the advantage it needs to avoid skin collagen breakdown.

Smoking is another major cause of Crow's feet. Smoking asphyxiates the skin, depriving it of oxygen. It also damages the collagen and elastin. Smoking contributes to an advanced progression of aging skin and deep-set wrinkles, especially Crow's feet. Again, repetitive movements, like squinting the eyes to avoid smoke, increases the development of Crow's feet.

Other factors such as hormonal issues, menopause in particular, can increase aging in the skin tissue. Estrogen is a hormone responsible for maintaining the elasticity in the skin. Estrogen keeps hydration levels and collagen production in check. When menopause occurs, estrogen levels decrease, accelerating the aging process. Wrinkles form because of the lack of collagen synthesis.

Professional-grade skin care products, made with top-rated ingredients, specifically address the delicate skin tissue surrounding the eyes. Ingredients in high-quality products are gentle enough to apply to the eye area and are also effective enough to produce real, firming results. Either in the form of a cream or a serum, these products smooth out the fine lines of Crow's feet. If products are applied at an earlier age, wrinkle reduction and prevention can be even more successful.

It's always best to select eye products that contain highly effective ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid. Professional-use ingredients provide ample hydration and plump fine lines and wrinkles. Peptides and growth factors are also a powerful ingredient choices to look for in anti-aging eye products.

Finally, consulting with an esthetician can lead clients in the right direction, when determining proper protocol for ingredients, product selection and advice on effective prevention and correction of Crow's feet.
