The skin has pores, or little openings on its surface, that produce sebum (oil) and serve as pathways for hair follicles. These openings on the epidermis can, at times, appear to be enlarged. This happens when dirt, oil and debris get trapped in the pores, expanding the skin and, as a result, the pores. Skin types on the oily side have larger pores because of the sebum production. As skin ages and loses its elasticity, pores can expand and look larger on the face. Usually, this is more noticeable on the forehead, nose and chin.

It's a common belief, too, that oily skin with enlarged pores is more prone to acne. This is partially true. Bacteria, buildup, dirt, oil and dead skin cells get trapped in the pores and, as a result, can form a pimple. This buildup in the pores expands the skin around that area, giving the pores an enlarged look. A great way to prevent this buildup and help control oil production is to cleanse and exfoliate with the proper products.

A balancing cleanser, in either a gel or foam form, is traditionally more preferred by oily skin types, as it provides a deep clean that doesn't strip away the skin. Oily skin types often want a "squeaky-clean” feel to the skin and, much to their detriment, will wash their face with hot water. Don’t do this. Hot water actually causes the pores to expand further and, even worse, dehydrates the skin. When oily skin becomes dehydrated, more oil is produced than necessary to compensate for the oil that was stripped away.

Cleansers with sulfates and harsh ingredients should also be avoided, as stripping the skin with a cleanser has the same effect as washing with hot water. And while exfoliation is good for removing dead skin-cell buildup and providing a brighter complexion, overexfoliation can have adverse effects. Just like cleansing with a harsh cleanser, overexfoliation can cause the overproduction of sebum to compensate for skin being stripped. Overexfoliation can also dry out the skin, causing flaking, peeling and, in some instances, irritation.

To find the correct cleanser and exfoliation product, consult with an esthetician to gain insight on proper ingredients and appropriate products for an at-home regimen. Estheticians will also show how to apply these products and the proper sequence of how to use them, providing clients with oily skin conditions with the know-how to improve their skin’s health.

Is it possible to actually shrink pores? No, actually, it’s not. It’s impossible to shrink pores, but it’s possible to reduce the appearance of large pores.

The best way to minimize enlarged pores is to keep the skin balanced and maintain a clean surface. Removing the buildup of dead skin cells not only keep pores from getting clogged, but it also provides a more even-toned complexion. Serums with a matte finish, and/or contain ingredients that infuse the skin with nourishment and control oil production also enhance the skin's appearance. Oily skin can tend to leave a shiny, dull complexion. Professional skin care products specifically designed for oily skin conditions should be used for a more radiant skin tone and a non-slick surface.
