images (1)Parabens....What are they? Why are they used in our products and what are they for? What kind of benefits can we get from them? Why is there so much controversy about Parabens and why are more cosmetic companies going with "Paraben-free" ingredients? In this article, we’ll answer these questions, so that you can fully comprehend what a Paraben is and whether or not you should avoid it.

Parabens are synthetic preservatives, mostly used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They’re used in manufacturing primarily because of their effectiveness as microbial and anti fungals, as well as, for their low cost.  They’re also used widely in moisturizers, shaving gels, deodorant, lotions, shampoos, make up and as some food additives. The vast majority of Parabens used in cosmetics are man made, synthetic and they’re not derived from natural sources. They’re normally used in conjunction with other ingredients to improve product preservation. Mehtyparabens, Butylparabens and Propyleparabens are usually combined in most formulationss, including skincare products. Sometimes all three are used in the same product.

Studies have lead to scientific debate over the potential health risk factors of Parabens. Some studies show that long term use can cause an endocrine toxicity level increase. Since Parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, they can potentially create an estrogen disruption. Amounts of Parabens have been found in breast tissue and even throughout the whole human body, but whether they are a cause for cancer is still inconclusive. The FDA and the CDC have deemed Parabens as “safe”, while many other countries refuse to use them in their products. There’s allot of inconclusive debate over whether or not Parabens are safe because they show up in cancerous tumors and non cancerous tissue.

Parabens that are commonly used can also cause skin irritations, hives, rash and dermatitis. They can irritate already inflamed skin, such as rosacea and eczema affected skin conditions. Even though Parabens are deemed as non toxic and safe by the FDA, people with some sensitive skin types and other skin conditions should avoid them.
