Dark Eye Circles

What are under-eye dark circles?

Under-eye dark circles can be very unpleasant. Dark circles are physically unattractive and can make a person look tired or even haggard. For many, this unwanted feature or condition can potentially affect their self-confidence. So, for dark eye circle sufferers, improving this problem can be more important than improving other problematic skin ailments.

Because the skin around our eyes is the thinnest of anywhere on our body, blood vessels underneath the skin can be more noticeable. A bluish hue can be seen underneath the eyes as light reflects off of blood vessels. Reduced sleep can also create a lack of oxygen in skin, which slows down blood flow to the veins, creating the same bluish, bruised look.

Aging skin can also play a key role in the creation of dark circles. Aging skin slows down collagen production that keeps the skin firm and supple. Over the years, skin will become thinner and less resilient. Because the skin tissue under the eyes is already the thinnest on the body, the aging process will allow blood vessels to, over time, become more prominent.

Other potential causes of under-eye darkness can be attributed to genetics, allergies, stress, diet, certain medications and some medical conditions. Allergy attacks and/or cold and flu illnesses can affect the sinuses, causing pressure to build up in the nasal cavity. This can affect blood flow under the eyes. Some medications can have side effects that can be responsible for the creation of under-eye dark circles. So can long-term drug use. Diet can play a role, too. A lack of nutritional value absorbed in the body can easily affect the skin. If the body isn't receiving proper nutrients, it shows immediately under the eyes. Genetics play a role if there’s a specific, eye condition that's passed down through the family. Period-specific hormonal issues, such as menstruation and menopause, can also be a reason for the development of under-eye dark circles.

With proper knowledge about potential causes, a treatment plan can be set in motion for the correction and/or improvement of dark eye circles. Regular, consistent rest, proper diet and professional skincare product treatments are the key to short- and long-term improvement. High-quality professional skin care products, specifically designed to address under-eye dark circles, contain effective ingredients such as Rosemary Essential Oil. Rosemary Oil is a stimulating ingredient that increases blood flow as it perks up the eyes. Horse Chestnut Extract, another popular ingredient found in topical skin care eye creams and serums, has the ability to strengthen capillary and blood vessel walls. By increasing circulation, dark circles become less visible.

There are a many ingredients that improve the delicate skin tissue under the eye, When considering your options, have a discussion with an Expert Esthetician or a Dermatologist about ingredients and product recommendations for the improvement of dark eye circles. Proper help will guide you in the direction of lighter, brighter eyes.
