Peptides

What are Peptides?

Peptides are a major breakthrough in the skincare industry, as the basic concept has allowed for high-tech skincare products that deliver powerful results. A peptide is a chain of two or more amino acids - imagine pearls linked together on a necklace. These amino acid "pearls" are arranged according to the desired purpose of the peptide. These purposes include firming the skin, plumping and filling fine lines and wrinkles, reducing inflammation, inhibiting wrinkle-forming facial expressions and lightening hyperpigmentation. Peptides can provide dramatic improvements in tone, texture and elasticity without irritating the skin.

Peptides may also serve as a carrier, signal or neurotransmitter. As a carrier, a peptide can deliver ingredients deep within the skin. As a signal, a peptide can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, thereby plumping and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. As a neurotransmitter, a peptide may inhibit muscle movement for a Botox-like result without using any neurotoxins.

Ingredient knowledge: peptides in skincare products

Peptides are strains of amino acids. Shorter strands consists of 2 or more amino acids, longer more branched strands, consist of 50 or less amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins in our system. Collagen, which consists of these strands, breaks down over time. All these components together is what helps to keep our skin firm, toned and non-wrinkled. Peptides are also the signaling response to our fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are responsible for elastin and collagen production. Certain peptide combinations determine the molecular make up and chains of the peptide to help encourage the beneficial response of collagen...
