Area of Body

When it comes to routine skin care, it’s easy to neglect certain areas of the body because attention and concern is usually focused primarily on the face. Many aggravating skin conditions can arise on the body in addition to or instead of the face. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and it protects us from many external and potentially harmful elements. Even with its awesome defensive capabilities, our skin needs additional help to properly defend itself against unwanted skin conditions, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, premature aging and long-term sun exposure damage.

Common, unwanted skin conditions that affect multiple areas of our skin include back acne, cellulite, dry skin patches, hyperpigmentation (skin discolorations) and sagging skin of the neck/chest areas. Some of these skin concerns may be genetic, caused by improper skin care routines and/or by not utilizing the correct products for sun protection. Other conditions that may arise can be brought on by hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, thyroid problems and/or hormone irregularities. How a condition arises and what the condition is can affect correct skin care product selection and a proper daily skin regimen needed to address individual and specific concerns.

Another primary factor that can cause many skin issues is the aging process. As we get older, our collagen synthesis (creation of new collagen) slows down. This causes our skin to lose its elasticity. Collagen is responsible for the firmness in skin tissue. The result is sagging skin with a lack of firmness. Aging skin is also the result of a reduction or shrinking of the skin's subcutaneous layer. This layer is where body fat is stored, giving the skin its cushion. When this fatty layer loses its density, skin can become fragile and more susceptible to bruising and trauma. Although aging is inevitable, measures to protect the skin and to keep it as reinforced as possible can be accomplished by utilizing specialized skin care products designed for improving barrier protection, hydration and collagen synthesis.

Long-term environmental damage and excessive sun exposure also damages skin cells, eventually discoloring and wrinkling the skin. Over a lifetime, harmful UVA/UVB rays can break down collagen and skin elasticity. Melanin (skin color) develops in the dermal layers and when skin is exposed to the sun, it pops up to the surface. These discolorations appear as blotchy brown spots that show where the skin has been primarily exposed to the sun. In addition to photo-aging damage and skin discolorations, unprotected sun exposure can place people at greater risk for skin cancers.

Other troubling body skin concerns can arise through extreme weight fluctuations and genetics. These concerns come in the form of cellulite and stretch marks. Cellulite is dimpled, uneven skin that usually affects the thigh and stomach areas. It’s usually linked to genetics, but some conditions can be a result of extreme weight gain. People who struggle with weight fluctuations or from being pregnant, where the body expands its levels of elasticity to its limits, can suffer damaging results from collagen fibers being torn. This creates scar-like formation, known as stretch marks. Cellulite and stretch marks can be stubborn to treat and it usually takes time for effective improvements to take place.

Some, if not most, skin conditions can be avoided or improved upon with regular preventative measures. Incorporating an extra five minutes a day to care for your body, the same way as you do with your facial routine, can do wonders for your skin. The majority of facial or body imperfections can be treated and improved with professional skincare products, combined with a focused daily skincare regimen and a healthy lifestyle.

In this section, an array of skin conditions that affect different areas of the body will be addressed, including recommended skincare products and regimens. This combination, done regularly, can reverse the visible signs of aging and imperfections while promoting healthier, more radiant-looking skin.
